The Eurasian Economic Union is an international organization for the integration of the regional economy, which has international legal validity. This union was established in 2015 with the following goals, (including five countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, and Belarus):
With an area of 20 million square meters, this union has a population of 183 million people, which is 2.6% of the world’s population. This union is the first producer of oil (14.6 percent), second place in gas production (20.7 percent), fourth place in electricity production, and fifth place in the production of grains and legumes (5.5 percent) in the world. Exports of member countries are mostly in the field of energy, fertilizers, basic consumer goods such as meat and grain, agricultural products, iron and steel and aluminum, machinery, electronic equipment, vehicles, medicine, and medical equipment. The trade volume of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union with the world in 2021 was 985 billion dollars, and the trade volume of Iran with this union in 2022 was 3.059 billion dollars.
Iran is a country that neighbors the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union from the south and the Persian Gulf countries from the north. Due to its geopolitical and geostrategic position, it can have an influencing role in the region. Also, Iran is a country rich in oil and gas resources, and to be in the best transportation location, that is, between the 2 Caspian Seas (Caspian) and the Persian Gulf, and the location of east-west transportation (New Silk Road) and China’s belt line (Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Iran), so, it can be a suitable route for the transfer of goods from Eurasian member countries. Therefore, Iran can be a bridge to connect Europe and Central Asia through the New Silk Road.
The north-south corridor between “Iran and Russia”, and “Iran and India” by passing through the Caspian Sea, provides Iran’s territory with open waters and connects Europe to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. Therefore, the role of Iran as a corridor for the transfer of oil and gas to Central Asia and the Caucasus as the second energy pole of the world has increased the importance of Iran’s presence in the Persian Gulf region. It should be noted that Iran has more than 2,000 kilometers of suitable operational coastline and a large number of strategic islands in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, and in the north of the country, it borders the second source of oil and gas in the world, which is Russia. Also, Iran’s role in the geopolitics of the Persian Gulf and its connection to peripheral regions such as Central Asia, Caucasus, South Asia, and North Africa is increasing. Therefore, Iran’s location on the northern edge of the Persian Gulf and the southern edge of the Caspian Sea has become a very effective factor in explaining the strategy of the Persian Gulf region and Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
Shanghai Organization has 9 permanent members and 3 observer members, including China, Iran, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan (permanent members) and Belarus, Mongolia, Afghanistan (observer members) Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is not just a military and security agreement and has gradually put economic issues at the forefront of its plans. With 37 million square kilometers, this organization constitutes 28% of the land area of the world and includes 3.421 billion people. The Shanghai Organization has the following 3 factors:
The Shanghai Organization is of special importance both in terms of “geoeconomics” and “geopolitics”. The trade volume of Shanghai Organization member countries with the world in 2021 was 8171 billion dollars, and the volume of trade of Iran with these organizations in 2022 was 41.3 billion dollars.
The Persian Gulf region consists of 8 countries (Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates) and is a prominent geopolitical region of the world that holds 63.5% of the world’s oil reserves. The Persian Gulf region is responsible for one of the main functions of the international system in the field of world energy supply. From a geopolitical point of view, the Persian Gulf is more aligned with the Southwest Asia region than with the Middle East. The two pipelines that will be built from Central Asia and the Caucasus should lead to the Persian Gulf and then to South Asia and the European Union. If the cooperation of the Persian Gulf countries increases in the following areas, it can be predicted that these cooperations will end in continuous and expanded convergence between the members of the Persian Gulf in the following subjects:
The trade volume of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council with the world in 2021 was 1516 billion dollars, and the volume of trade between these countries with Iran in 2022 was 26.1 billion dollars.
